As an HLTA, you will work closely with teachers to plan, deliver, and assess targeted lessons, stepping in to lead whole-class sessions when needed. Your role will involve working one-on-one with pupils, managing small groups, and supporting behaviour and learning strategies across the curriculum. You’ll be expected to contribute to curriculum development, bring creativity to your teaching support, and use your specialist knowledge—whether that’s in literacy, ICT, or a specific subject area—to inspire progress.
To be successful in this role, you must have a Level 4 or 5 Teaching Assistant qualification, with the appropriate HLTA status or equivalent professional qualification. You should be confident using ICT to enhance learning and have solid knowledge of current educational developments. Excellent communication, relationship-building skills, and the ability to work across various age groups are essential. Experience across more than one year group and any specialist training—such as sign language or targeted intervention strategies—is a major plus.
